Celine Dion was only 19 years old when she first started dating her manager, René Angélil, who was 45 at the time. The celebrity couple brought a lot of attention to May-December relationships when they walked down the aisle in 1994. Although Dion and Angélil didn’t care about the 26-year age difference between them, the now 45-year-old singer recently revealed that not everyone in her family approved of her being with an older man—in fact, Dion’s mother was very much against it at first.
Looking back on her May-December relationship with Angélil now, Dion recalls how difficult it was for her mother to accept their age difference. “When I told her I had some really strong feelings for René she tried everything to kill him and make me snap out of it,” Dion said. “I was very frustrated and mad at first, but she tried to make me understand that this man tried marriage twice before, he has three children, he’s not responsible.” Dion admitted that it was until the rest of her family fell in love with her older man too that her mother had no choice but to accept their May-December relationship.
The celebrity couple has been married for almost 19 years now and even has three kids of their own. So now that Dion is a mother herself, how would she feel about one of her kids being in a May-December relationship? It turns out that she doesn’t blame her mother at all for being skeptical because she would probably have the same reaction if one of her sons brought home an older, divorced woman with kids. “When I had my first son, [René-Charles], if I think of him and he comes [to me] with this lady who has kids and she’s 45 and she thinks she knows best, [I’d be] like, ‘Take your hand off of my son.’”
What do you think: How would you feel if your daughter told you that she was falling in love with a much older man?
