Michael Douglas, 68, vowed to stand by his wife, 43-year-old Catherine Zeta-Jones, through sickness and health and he’s sticking to his word. The actress, who revealed in 2011 that she suffers from bipolar II disorder, has checked herself into a mental health facility to “manage her health in an optimum manner,” according to her rep. This is the second time Zeta-Jones has sought treatment for bipolar disorder, a mood disorder often characterized by alternating episodes of depression and mania.
Despite her having to be away for several days, Douglas is fully behind his wife’s decision to seek further treatment. “He couldn’t be more supportive, just like she is of him. They’re solid,” an insider told People. “They’re really, really devoted to each other.”
When Zeta-Jones first checked in for treatment in 2011, Douglas was just recovering from advanced throat cancer. His tumor has since been successfully treated and his wife is managing her illness well—her current treatment plan is simply to monitor medication. The couple was all smiles when they were spotted earlier this month in New York City for the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 40th Annual Chaplin Award Gala.
Despite their health struggles, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are a perfect example of how age isn’t anything but a number when it comes to sustaining a happy, healthy marriage.
