Sean Penn, 53, recently cast his new younger girlfriend, Charlize Theron, 38, as the female lead in his upcoming movie The Last Face. That’s not too shocking, considering this celebrity couple hasn’t been able to tear themselves away from each other since going public with their May-December relationship.
But what is surprising is that the role actually belonged to Sean Penn’s ex-wife, Robin Wright, first. In fact, the whole film started as her project, and now he’s completely left her out of the project in favor of his new younger woman.
When the script for The Last Face was done years ago, Robin Wright worked tirelessly to try and get the film developed—Sean Penn had nothing to do with it. The plan was reportedly that Wright would star in the movie, but when financing fell through, she gave up on the project and the script was eventually sold to producer/director Matt Palmieri.
Palmieri then approached Sean Penn to direct the film. Rather than go to Robin Wright with the role that was hers to begin with it, Penn cast Charlize Theron. “This is obviously a vindictive move against his ex-wife, for whom The Last Face was a labor of love,” one source told Page Six.
Meanwhile, rumors have been swirling recently that Sean Penn and his new leading lady, Charlize Theron, secretly got engaged. Although friends of the celebrity couple confirmed that there hasn’t been a proposal, at least not yet, they did admit that they wouldn’t be too surprised if he popped the question very soon.
What do you think: Did Sean Penn cast Charlize Theron just to spite his ex-wife, Robin Wright?
