I laid there in the hospital bed, watching the contraction monitor and reeling from my own choices. I was the one who set my older fiancé, Keegan, up with a sex buddy, so that he wouldn’t have to suffer from me being forced into bed rest. I was doing him a favor, but the stress had finally gotten to me—and maybe even harmed our unborn child.
The doctor came in and gave me a hug.
“What was that for Dr. M?” I asked.
Dr. M was a very handsome, warm, and funny guy. Strangely enough, I was attracted to him in the weirdest way, but it didn’t start until I was pregnant. He was very friendly with my fiancé, and an all-around fun guy to be around. We had spent a significant amount of time together as my serious pregnancy complications mounted.

Dr. M sat down on the edge of my hospital bed, put his hand on my hip opposite of the side he was sitting on, looked me square in the eye, and said, “Everything will be fine, Vivian. But I need you to come clean with me. What’s going on that got you this worked up? Is everything OK at home? I’ve only seen you here once without your fiancé and he wasn’t far behind, and yet here you are alone and there’s no sign of him. I know something’s going on—you’re obviously going through some rough times. Talk to me, Vivian.”
I could hear what he was saying, but I just couldn’t focus. I really just wanted to kiss him for some reason, but I was a massive whale and there was no way I could lean that far forward. And there was Keegan.
I explained the situation at home as the nurse came in to give me more medication to stop the contractions. Dr. M didn’t move, which clearly made the nurse uncomfortable, seeing him that close to a patient. He smiled as he listened and even chuckled at my antics to get my fiancé laid. But it was what he said next that left me completely stunned. It was the last thing I expected my doctor to tell me…
