Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, 21-Year Age Difference

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening

Warren Beatty and Annette BeningWhen it comes to Hollywood’s power couples, Warren Beatty and Annette Bening still reign. Both are successful actors in their own rights, and with the 21-year age difference between them, the celebrity couple is the perfect demonstration of how a May-December relationship—and, in this case, marriage—can work just as well as a more traditional one.

Warren Beatty first started acting in 1957—one year before Bening was born—with minor appearances on various television shows. In 1961, he made his film debut in Splendor in the Grass, and despite it being his first movie role, Beatty earned critical praise for his performance, not to mention a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. He continued rising to the top with steady film roles. Then, in 1967, Beatty’s celebrity status hit an all new high when he produced and starred in Bonnie and Clyde. The film earned 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Actor and Best Picture, as well as seven Golden Globe nominations. The film is still regarded today as a classic.

When Bening first entered the film scene in 1988, Beatty seemed to be nearing the end of his. Fortunately, he still had a few good years left in him because it was his career as an actor that would bring him together with Bening. The pair teamed up to play lovers in the 1991 film Bugsy—Beatty played the iconic mobster Bugsy Siegel, and Bening played his famous girlfriend, Virginia Hill. There was obviously chemistry between them on set because one year later, the celebrity couple got married.

When news of their marriage first surfaced, people were surprised that Beatty was actually settling down—he had become known as quite the playboy, romancing a bevy of beauties, many of whom were much younger than he was. Nonetheless, when he married Bening, he was in his mid-50s and realized that it was time to start thinking realistically about his future. “After years of running around and having a good time, I began to realize with some embarrassment that in most ways my movies all seem to return to one fairly unoriginal recurring theme: ‘Love conquers all,’” said the actor. “I don’t know if it’s true, but it seems to be true for me.”

Bening knew what she was getting into by getting together with an older, promiscuous man, but for her, it was worth it. “I didn’t have any preconceptions about him. He didn’t have any about me either. This wasn’t about how many women he had been out with. Sure he likes women. Why shouldn’t he? He makes you feel good. Well, he made me feel good,” she admitted, adding, “I think we both knew pretty early on in Bugsy what was going on between us.”

Bening seems to be just what Beatty needed because, after over two decades of marriage and four kids together, the celebrity couple has never been more in love. And Beatty says he’s more than happy taking only one woman to bed every night. “For me, the highest level of sexual excitement is in a monogamous relationship. I would hate myself if I failed to live up to it.”
