What Michael Douglas Regrets Most About His Marriage

Actors Michael Dou­glas and Cather­ine Zeta-Jones make up one of the most famous celebrity cou­ples when it comes to May-December rela­tion­ships. Despite being hap­pily mar­ried to Zeta-Jones for 13 years, Dou­glas still has some regrets when look­ing back on his life over the past few years. His biggest regret has to do with marriage.

Before Dou­glas and Zeta-Jones tied the knot in 2000, the actor was pre­vi­ously mar­ried to another younger woman, Dian­dra Luker, who was 13 years younger than him. Their mar­riage lasted almost 20 years, but accord­ing to Dou­glas, that was far too long. “I have noth­ing against [Luker] and in fact I’m very fond of my first wife. But we should have ended that mar­riage eight or 10 years ear­lier,” said Dou­glas, who admit­ted that even going to a mar­riage coun­selor wasn’t the smartest solu­tion. “It took me too long to real­ize that if you go to a mar­riage coun­selor to resolve prob­lems, it’s in his best inter­ests to keep the mar­riage going because if I end the mar­riage, he’s got no business.”

That being said, Dou­glas is much hap­pier with his cur­rent wife, although he admits that even true love takes work and has to be “nur­tured,” some­thing he’s learned with age. “The thing I’ve learned about get­ting older is you can’t take love for granted. You pro­tect it, nur­ture it and it grows and, after one’s ini­tial, phys­i­cal emo­tional aspects, it becomes deeper.”
