Actors Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones make up one of the most famous celebrity couples when it comes to May-December relationships. Despite being happily married to Zeta-Jones for 13 years, Douglas still has some regrets when looking back on his life over the past few years. His biggest regret has to do with marriage.
Before Douglas and Zeta-Jones tied the knot in 2000, the actor was previously married to another younger woman, Diandra Luker, who was 13 years younger than him. Their marriage lasted almost 20 years, but according to Douglas, that was far too long. “I have nothing against [Luker] and in fact I’m very fond of my first wife. But we should have ended that marriage eight or 10 years earlier,” said Douglas, who admitted that even going to a marriage counselor wasn’t the smartest solution. “It took me too long to realize that if you go to a marriage counselor to resolve problems, it’s in his best interests to keep the marriage going because if I end the marriage, he’s got no business.”
That being said, Douglas is much happier with his current wife, although he admits that even true love takes work and has to be “nurtured,” something he’s learned with age. “The thing I’ve learned about getting older is you can’t take love for granted. You protect it, nurture it and it grows and, after one’s initial, physical emotional aspects, it becomes deeper.”
